Dancers gradually file into the second-floor Meany Hall studios from the hallway. In the first room, a few students carry out the ballet barres to the center of the room while the others stretch on the floor. Once the teacher and the accompanist arrive, the dancers begin warming up their bodies with a simple exercise. The difficulty of the dance exercises increases as the class progresses. The instructor walks through the room, correcting each student’s technique. The other classroom contains students laying on individual yoga mats. They are moving through different positions and the instructor repeatedly emphasizes the importance of the breath. The students seem relaxed and concentrate on the positions of their bodies.

6:40 PM – I'm sitting in the Suzzalo Espresso. The actual cafe is closed, and the room is nearly empty. Five other tables are occupied. People are talking at one of them, but their voices are pitched low and don't carry. The loudest sound in the room is the hum of the fluorescent lights, followed closely by the soft churning of the air conditioner. The big brass clock behind me chimes very softly every 15 minutes. It took me a few seconds before I even noticed the noise. More people are showing up at about half the rate that the people here are leaving. 7:05 PM – More people are in the reading room than in any other part of the library, although they are still spread very thinly because of the room's enormous size. The incidence of laptops here is high, as is the number of portable music players. Many of the curtains over the stained glass windows are drawn, and the chandelier lights are off; most people are studying by the light of the desk lamps, and the shelves are illuminated by their own rows of lights. This, combined with the large bar lamps that span the length of the tables, gives a sense of downward direction to the room. 7:25 PM – I have wandered onto the rest of the second , no, wait, make that third, floor of Allen. The space is mostly taken up with interminable rows of generic chromatic hardcovers. The title of a random book off one of the shelves is Great Poets and Their Theology; another shelf holds a number of cryptically-named periodicals. One does not get the impression that people come up here looking for books often. The shelves seem rather to hide the deceptively large number of people hiding in the nooks and crannies of the building. Although I initially thought I was the only person in the area when I exited the reading room, a quick survey of the boundaries of the floor revealed a number of people spaced relatively evenly among the various reading areas. One student sits highlighting a course pack, the view out over the walkway under Allen all to himself. This is the quietest part of the building, which is quite an accomplishment. The only noise is the occasional racket that carries up from the covered walkway under us. I'm now off to explore the second and fourth floors, but I do not expect them to deviate from the pattern I've seen thus far.

7:50 PM – In contrast to my expectations, the fourth floor of Allen Library is much more open than the third or second. It makes up for this by being nearly deserted. As I wander back into the far reaches of the shelves, I become very aware of the squeak in the heel of my left shoe. Back in a corner, it occurs to me to wonder how long it takes somebody to wander through the library to make sure everyone is out before closing. If I didn't have a paper to write, I'd be tempted to take a light nap back here and see how long it took for me to see anyone else. I need to check the closing hours of the library. Although further browsing of the shelves has strengthened my suspicion that they are used for isolation, I believe that I was mistaken earlier when I thought that the books here were boring and infrequently sought. a. 12-15. About 2 hours a day.
2. Where do you visit there?
a. The whole place
i. Cardio center up and downstairs free weights and machines.

3. Why do you visit the IMA?
a. To look good for Nicole. Haha, no really I could care less about girls
b. I want to see how fit I can get.
4. Why is that?
a. I would be disappointed in my self if I couldn’t achieve this goal of mine.
b. If I have free time it is better to use it in something productive and I want to be able to compete in sports and marathons.
5. Why the IMA?
a. It is convenient.
b. It’s a really good facility.
6. How do you feel when you are at the IMA?
a. I feel pretty comfortable when I am there because I pretty much know where everything is and where I need to go, I’m pretty used to it.
7. How do you see the IMA functioning as a space?
a. Sometimes they are crowded
b. There is one room downstairs just for UW athletes that I don’t like because I can’t use it. They have their own facilities.
8. What is missing from the IMA? Or should something be improved?
a. A steam room
b. A spinning class
c. There is a tanning area outside by the pool that no one ever uses, and it is just a waste of space
d. A supplement store
e. Change the music in the weight room, I don’t want to listen to country or 70s oldies music when I am trying to lift weights
9. Is there anything else you would like to say about the IMA?
a. I enjoy it.

12:14—Despite the unattractive framework of the interior of the fountain, surrounded by fences with barbed wire on top, I immediately noticed the scent of the roses. The flowers surrounding the fountain are in full bloom, demonstrating an array of colors and smells for the senses to take in. There is a family walking towards campus with a mother pushing the stroller while the father holds the baby.
12:16—as I take pictures capturing the area, what looks like a small tour group and a runner move around me as they try to avoid getting into my picture. The runner is heading in the direction of the IMA.
12:20—a group of students enters the area from the direction of the Hub, carrying take-out boxes and drinks, presumably on a lunch break.
12:32—a man is standing in front of Bagley hall close to the fence surrounding the fountain, which I found odd since no one else but myself seemed to pay that much attention to the empty fountain. Then I noticed that he was out on a cigarette break.
12:35—another man and a woman join the first in their cigarette break.
12:38—a man is lying completely across one of the benches, taking a nap.
12:48—the lawn south of the fountain is busier than the rest of the area. A group of three people play Frisbee. A few groups of classes are sitting in circles. A large group of small children, lead by a few adults, are lead around the fountain to the small strip of lawn on the north side of the fountain where they stop for snacks and stories. A group of guys with basketballs and athletic gear are returning/heading to the IMA.
1:00-1:08—there is a large rush of people at the fountain all of a sudden. It seems to be the transition time between classes.
1:10—as I leave the area, it seems to be busier than when I first arrived, but the activity seems to come in waves.

• What do you use Red Square for?
o I usually just cross through it to get from one end of campus to the next or if I need to go study at one of the libraries or if my class is in Kane. It’s also a good meeting place because everyone knows where it is, it’s pretty hard to miss. It’s also right in the center of campus, so since I live in McMahon, when I meet with someone from Terry or Lander, it’s a midway point.
• What do you see other people use it for?
o Its pretty empty today, but probably because it’s the summer. Usually I see large groups of skateboarders on the benches by Meany, or people swing dancing near the center benches, or playing Frisbee across the square. And I think everyone knows the guy that preaches about god and religion on the steps. Fraternities and sororities also sometimes set up tables in front of Kane. You also see lots of tourists taking pictures of Suzallo.
• So would you say that Red Square is more of a recreational meeting place and less of an academic space?
o Yea, definitely. Well, Suzallo and Odegaard are the two biggest libraries on campus, and Kane is the huge lecture hall, but the square itself doesn’t seem to deal much with academics. I usually don’t see many people studying in Red Square. They just pass through or hang out.

• What do you use Red Square for?
o Freshman year I would come out here all the time to ‘people watch.’ So many people walk through here. You see undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, tourists, athletes, different races, different styles of dress etc. Its also fun to watch the skateboarders try the same stunts over and over again and its always the same group of people. Now that I’m so busy though, I just walk through to get to the library. I don’t walk through it as much as I used to though since most of my classes are in the quad. You know when you’re a freshman, you have all kinds of classes to take for gen ed stuff, so your classes are all over the place. Now I don’t go to south campus much since that’s where all the science classes are and I’m not a science major!
• So do you think this big space divides the campus between art and science majors?
o I guess so. I mean, south campus you have the medical center, engineering, and that chemistry building, and north campus is the quad where the English majors, communications, art, and music is. And Kane is just sort of a general lecture hall.
• What do you think the purpose or function of this space is?
o I see it kind of as the heart of the campus. Its right in the middle, it has the two main libraries and Kane is the main lecture hall so you have all this major academic stuff around it. And I think that hall next to suzallo and across from kane, I don’t know what it’s called, is where the regents and presidents run the campus. Other than the surrounding areas of campus, like where the dorms are or the IMA is, it’s one of the few places where you can see non-academic activity, like people playing Frisbee or swing dancing. Also, I remember when I took the tour here as a freshman; the group leader mentioned that it might be called red square after the square in Russia, where there were protests. I do see speakers once in a while, so it’s a nice big space to gather and talk and hear about things. Also large events, like I think it was the ROTC graduation, take place here or during Washington weekend they set up that huge barbeque area and stage. It’s a good place for large get togethers.
